Srinagar, March 31: The spokesperson for the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) has strongly condemned the statement made by National Conference (NC) legislator Hasnain Masoodi. Masoodi justified the sale of alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir based on potential revenue benefits for the Union Territory during a media interaction outside the assembly.
The spokesperson remarked that such statements are deeply unfortunate, as Islam explicitly prohibits intoxicants. This justification contradicts the core values and beliefs of Islam. It also overlooks the severe social consequences of alcohol consumption, including domestic strife, economic hardship, and moral decay.
Furthermore, the spokesperson expressed disappointment and concern over a political party claiming to uphold Kashmir’s culture, values, and identity while making such justifications.
The MMU emphasized that economic interests cannot be placed above moral, social, and humanitarian welfare. Justifying alcohol based on revenue reflects a troubling perspective on governance.
Describing it as a well-known threat that gradually undermines the moral and social fabric of society, the MMU called on the ruling party to clarify its stance. They urged for an immediate and concrete action to impose a complete ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir and to impose strict penalties on those involved in its smuggling, which is essential for the broader interests of society and the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
It is noteworthy that NC legislator Hasnain Masoodi stated on Monday that a complete ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir could adversely affect tourism and government revenue. He also raised concerns about enforcement and potential smuggling issues. Masoodi commented, “Alcohol is a major source of revenue, and we must consider this. The government currently earns approximately ₹4,000 crore annually from alcohol-related revenue, which significantly contributes to the finances of the Union Territory.”
