New Delhi, August 12: Opposition leaders have retaliated against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the BJP-led central government of intentionally creating a stalemate. They argued that the central minister could have responded to the alleged police excesses against student protesters during the Parliament march on July 20 at least a week earlier.
This reaction follows Shah’s statement that he is “ready to answer every question” regarding the July 20 incident. He also accused the opposition of deliberately obstructing discussions.
The opposition has repeatedly demanded the presence of the central minister in the House and sought a statement regarding the police action against students involved in the protest march. This deadlock has repeatedly disrupted the proceedings of the Parliament’s monsoon session.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee stated, “After breaking parties and achieving such a large majority, your avoidance of the House shows that you do not want to answer the opposition’s questions. You are scared inside, and you know that what happened in Delhi under your directives was somehow wrong, and you have no answer for it.”
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh also remarked, “Thursday is the last day of the session, and today he (the Home Minister) suddenly became ‘ready to respond.’ This means you deliberately created a stalemate and prevented the Parliament session from proceeding. The entire government has been trying to postpone the session as much as possible.”
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Maji echoed similar sentiments. She said, “So much precious time of the country has been wasted, money has been squandered, chaos has ensued, and walkouts have occurred, leading to repeated adjournments of the House. Now, with almost the last day of the session upon us and only half a day left, we do not understand why this is being said so late when the country wanted to hear it from day one.”
She added, “If this statement had been made a week ago, the House could have functioned properly. I believe that important issues should be discussed at the outset in the future.”
Congress MP Chamalakiran Kumar Reddy questioned, “If they did nothing wrong, why did they hide for so long and force us to protest daily at Makar Dwaar? Instead, they could have done this last week, at least allowing the House to function.”
He concluded, “The session is about to end. I do not understand why they want to confuse the people of the country and make it seem like the fault is ours. We have done nothing wrong. We have been demanding answers for several days, but they have not provided any. The aim is merely to confuse the public and convey the message that it is the opposition parties that are preventing the House from functioning.”
