Baghdad, August 12: A Kurdish security source has reported that four unidentified drones crashed in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. The incidents occurred in various areas of the city on Wednesday. Although there was damage to property, no casualties were reported.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed Xinhua that one drone collided with a residential home in the Soran area, resulting in property damage and broken windows in nearby houses.
Additionally, two drones fell near the Khalifan area, while the fourth crashed close to the Harir area, igniting a fire in the grass. Civil defense teams arrived promptly and managed to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from this incident.
In related news, Kurdish media reported that Iran launched a severe missile and drone attack on Iranian Kurdish opposition groups’ positions in northern Erbil province on the same day. According to a Peshmerga commander, the strikes targeted fighters from the Komala Party and the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in the Alama Valley of Erbil province. So far, there have been no confirmed casualties from this attack.
The ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran has heightened regional tensions. Recently, there has been an increase in drone and missile attacks in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
Since the onset of the war in February, hundreds of missiles and drones have fallen in Kurdish areas. Just on Tuesday, Al Jazeera aired a video of a conversation with Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), where he stated that the region has paid a “heavy price” in the conflict.
During the interview on Al Jazeera’s show, Barzani remarked, “We have been targeted over 1,000 times by missiles and drones from either Iran or some rebel groups within Iraq. We believe all these attacks on Kurdistan are unjust. Unfortunately, our people have suffered casualties, and we have lost many of our own. Many of our properties have been severely damaged.”
