Mumbai, August 12: A devastating landslide occurred in a residential area of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, following heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people, including three children, and injuring four others.
The incident took place around 3:48 AM in the Gausiya Chawl area of Ashok Nagar, Chirag Nagar, while residents were asleep. A portion of a nearby hill collapsed, sending mud, large stones, and debris crashing onto the homes below.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his sorrow on social media, stating that the news of the landslide in Ghatkopar’s Sakinaka Gausiya Chawl is extremely tragic. He conveyed condolences to the families of the victims, noting that continuous heavy rain had caused the hillside to give way, burying some individuals under the rubble. Rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the scene, and the injured were taken to hospitals for urgent medical care.
Municipal officials confirmed that seven victims were brought dead to the Rajawadi Hospital, operated by the Ghatkopar Municipal Corporation.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Sameer Ansari (14), Sahil Hussain Abdul Qazi (19), Aban Arif Sheikh (2), Manat Arif Sheikh (4), Marjina Arif Sheikh (27), Viket Ramesh Yadav (27), and one unidentified adult.
Four injured individuals, Sohail Ansari (18), Mohammad Ansari (14), Naimuddin Iqbal Khan (28), and Sajid Ansari (16), were rescued and admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, where officials reported their condition as stable.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Mumbai Police, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward staff immediately launched search and rescue operations.
Rescue personnel faced significant challenges due to the layout of Chirag Nagar. The narrow paths leading to Gausiya Chawl only allowed one person to pass at a time, preventing heavy machinery from accessing the debris site.
Rescue teams had to rely on hand tools and equipment to remove concrete slabs and rubble.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site to assess relief efforts and speak with affected families. She announced an immediate financial assistance package, which includes ₹400,000 for the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for the medical treatment of each injured person.
Due to the ongoing heavy rainfall in the Mumbai metropolitan area, the municipal corporation has issued a high alert for surrounding hilly regions.
