Governor of New Jersey, Mickey Sherrill, and Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, made the announcement. They issued an official proclamation honoring India’s 79th Independence Day, recognizing the country’s freedom, democratic values, and the contributions of the Indian-American community.
In the proclamation, the New Jersey Governor stated that August 15, 2026, marks the 79th anniversary of India’s independence. This occasion celebrates nearly eight decades of India as the world’s largest democracy and the values of freedom, self-determination, and representative governance.
