Odisha Reports 54 Communal Riots Between June 2024 and February 2026: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, March 10: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Monday that the state recorded 54 communal riots between June 2024 and February 2026 across various districts.

In response to a question from BJD MLA Gautam Buddha Das in the assembly, CM Majhi revealed that out of these incidents, 24 cases of communal violence were reported solely in Balasore district, making it the most affected area during this period.

Since the BJP government came to power, Khurda district has seen 16 cases related to communal riots. Additionally, in the past 20 months, Koraput recorded eight incidents, Malkangiri four, and Bhadrak two.

The Chief Minister also noted that there were seven deaths due to lynching in different parts of the state from June 2024 until the end of February this year. Information shared in the assembly indicated that three cases of mob lynching occurred in the tribal-dominated Rayagada district, suspected to be related to witchcraft. Between June 2024 and February 2025, two cases of mob lynching were reported in Dhenkanal, with one case each in Balasore and Deogarh.

CM Majhi stated that the government is working to maintain communal harmony by establishing peace committees at various police stations. These committees aim to improve coordination between different communities and help prevent local tensions.

He also directed local administrations to take proactive steps to foster goodwill among communities. Majhi emphasized that intelligence inputs are being closely monitored to identify individuals or groups attempting to disrupt peace. Based on these inputs, officials are implementing preventive and corrective measures to maintain law and order.

He further mentioned that strict legal action is being taken against lawbreakers, with cases registered and arrests made where necessary. The government is also conducting awareness programs to prevent mob violence, including attacks motivated by suspicions of witchcraft.
