Odisha Identifies 77 Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants, Majority Deported: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, February 23: The Odisha government has identified 77 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi announced this information in the Odisha Assembly on Monday.

In response to a question from BJP MLA Padma Lochan Panda, the Chief Minister stated that the identification was part of a state-wide drive conducted according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

He explained that, as per MHA letter number 25022/28/2020-FI (Part-3) dated May 2, 2025, all district police superintendents were instructed to expedite the identification of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

The Chief Minister noted that police superintendents are adhering to MHA guidelines and conducting verification drives within their jurisdictions. During the verification process across the state, documents of 2,261 suspicious individuals were examined. Of these, 2,184 were found to be Indian citizens and were released after credential verification.

The remaining 77 individuals were identified as illegal Bangladeshi nationals. Their identification included 26 from the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD), 14 from Cuttack UPD, six from Berhampur, one each from Ganjam and Koraput districts, four from Kandhamal, three from Kendrapara, and 21 from Jagatsinghpur district.

The Chief Minister informed the Assembly that 73 of the identified Bangladeshi nationals have already been deported back to Bangladesh. He further mentioned that two Bangladeshi nationals had fraudulently obtained Indian passports using fake documents. The police have filed separate cases against them and presented them in court for further legal action.

Meanwhile, the deportation process for the remaining two Bangladeshi nationals identified in the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District is still ongoing. The Chief Minister added that the state government has intensified efforts to identify and deport illegal foreign nationals residing in Odisha.

He instructed Odisha police to thoroughly verify the identities of suspicious individuals, including investigating financial transactions, communication records, and digital footprints to ascertain their nationality.
