New Delhi, March 23: The Iranian Embassy in India has shared a statement from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foreign Ministry regarding maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry emphasized that to achieve peace and stability in the Strait, the activities of the United States and Israel must be halted.
The Iranian Embassy stated, “As a responsible nation that adheres to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, Iran has long sought to uphold these principles in the maritime regions of the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman. It is clear that respect for these principles, including passage through the Strait, cannot be achieved without honoring the sovereignty and rights of coastal nations.”
The Foreign Ministry of Iran asserted that any measures related to navigation safety in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman should be implemented with full respect for Iran’s rights and interests. Furthermore, these actions should be coordinated with the relevant authorities, taking into account the current conditions arising from attacks and conflicts.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated the need to stop the US and Israeli actions that create instability in the region. The Indian Embassy quoted the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stating, “It is evident that to restore security and lasting stability in this Strait, it is essential to end military attacks and threats, as well as to halt the destabilizing activities of the US and the Israeli regime while fully respecting Iran’s legitimate interests.”
Following a military attack by the US and Israeli regime against Iran on February 28, 2026, which clearly violated Article 2(4) of the UN Charter regarding the use of force, a dangerous situation has emerged in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The consequences of this situation have directly impacted maritime navigation and shipping security.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, “Exercising our right to self-defense against the attacking parties, Iran has adopted measures to ensure that aggressors and their supporters cannot exploit the Strait of Hormuz for their hostile intentions. As a coastal nation of the Strait, and in accordance with the established principles and rules of international law, Iran has prevented the passage of attacking parties and vessels involved in their assaults.”
