New Delhi, March 23: The issue of premature graying hair has become increasingly common among younger individuals today. Contrary to popular belief, gray hair is not merely a sign of aging; it often indicates a deficiency in nutrition.

Several factors can contribute to hair turning gray, but Ayurveda links this phenomenon primarily to an increase in pitta and an unhealthy lifestyle. An imbalanced pitta dosha is not only a major cause of graying hair but can also lead to digestive disorders.

According to Ayurvedic principles, the main reasons for premature graying include an elevated pitta dosha, poor dietary habits, stress, and an unhealthy lifestyle. By regulating lifestyle choices and balancing the doshas, one can prevent the progression of gray hair. Ayurveda offers various methods to address this issue. It is essential to focus on both internal and external nourishment to combat the growth of gray hair.

First and foremost, balancing pitta is crucial. This can be achieved by consuming less spicy and oily foods, while reducing the intake of tea, sour foods, coffee, and salty items. These foods can aggravate pitta in the body. Ayurveda also prescribes specific dietary choices to combat graying hair, including amla, beetroot, ghee, black raisins, shatavari, and triphala powder. Additionally, massaging the scalp with pure coconut oil and bhringraj oil twice a week can significantly help in preventing gray hair.

Mental stress is another contributing factor to premature graying. Inadequate sleep, excessive strain on the eyes, anger, and irritability can adversely affect mental health. It is important to ensure adequate sleep and manage anger effectively. To maintain calmness, take deep breaths in fresh air and spend as much time as possible in nature.
