Bhubaneswar, June 27: Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi stated on Friday that Odisha cinema symbolizes the cultural identity of the state. He reiterated that the Odisha government will soon introduce a new film policy aimed at ensuring the overall development of the Odia film industry while providing greater security and support to artists.
While addressing the 35th and 36th State Film Awards ceremony held at the Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, Majhi emphasized that Odia cinema is a hallmark of the state’s identity. He mentioned that the government is preparing a new film policy to promote the comprehensive growth of the film industry and the welfare and protection of artists.
He noted that the government recently held constructive discussions with members of the Odia film fraternity regarding the current status and development of Odia cinema. The government is committed to providing technical assistance for the welfare of artists and quality film production, with a significant announcement expected soon.
Majhi assured that the state would soon make important announcements aimed at protecting artists and promoting the production of high-quality films.
Highlighting the rich heritage of Odia cinema, Majhi recalled that Odisha became a separate province in 1936, the same year the first Odia feature film, “Sita Bibaha,” was produced by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami. He noted that classic films like “Maya Miriga,” “Bhukha,” “Shesha Shraban,” and “Hakim Babu” showcased Odisha’s culture on the global stage.
He pointed out that recent critically acclaimed films such as “Daman,” “Pratiksha,” “Sala Budha,” “Pushkara,” “Bau Buttu Bhuta,” and “Bara Badhu” have given Odia cinema a new national identity, marking the dawn of a new era for the industry.
Emphasizing the importance of technology and OTT platforms, Majhi stated that young filmmakers from Odisha have demonstrated world-class skills in cinematography, sound design, and visual effects (VFX).
