Bhubaneswar, May 8: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi expressed profound sorrow on Thursday over the mob lynching of a young man in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, specifically in Balianta. He directed the police to take stringent action against those involved in this heinous crime.
According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Majhi spoke with Odisha’s Director General of Police, Y.B. Khurania, instructing him to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure strict action against the culprits.
The Chief Minister advised the police administration and force to remain vigilant to prevent any future incidents of mob lynching. He emphasized the need for the police to take the strictest measures to maintain law and order in the state. So far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
The CMO also noted that the Chief Minister discussed the incident with the Chairperson of the Odisha State Women’s Commission, Suvana Mohanty.
Meanwhile, Mohanty is expected to visit Balianta on Friday to speak with women who have accused the deceased, Soumya Ranjan Swain, of sexual harassment. Her aim is to uncover the truth while considering all aspects of the incident.
It is noteworthy that the deceased, Swain, was traveling towards Bhubaneswar with his friend, Om Prakash Raut, when they encountered two girls on a scooter. While overtaking the vehicle, Swain’s motorcycle collided with the girls’ scooter, leading to a heated argument near the Ramchandrapur Bridge in the Balianta police jurisdiction.
When Swain allegedly attempted to sexually assault the girls, local villagers rushed to the scene upon hearing their screams. They bound Swain with ropes and brutally beat him. The police arrived shortly after and rescued both individuals, transporting them to the hospital, where doctors declared Soumya dead. The deceased was a member of the Odisha Government Railway Police (GRP).
