New Delhi, June 26: The Khayala police in New Delhi have arrested a husband and father-in-law in connection with the suicide of a woman who was reportedly subjected to dowry harassment.
Police officials revealed that initial investigations indicated the woman faced continuous mental and physical abuse since her marriage, primarily due to dowry demands and the absence of children.
On June 24, the police received a call reporting the woman’s death under DD number 46A. Investigating officer SI Mohit Bansal arrived at the scene, where 24-year-old Kajal, wife of Rohan, was found dead in their rented room in Raghubir Nagar. A ligature mark was discovered on her neck, and a dupatta was recovered tied to the window grill. The crime and forensic teams also inspected the site, collecting necessary evidence.
Investigations revealed that Kajal had been married to Rohan for about three years, and the couple had no children. Given the seriousness of the situation, the SDM of Rajouri Garden was notified. Kajal was taken to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Subsequently, statements from her parents and other relatives were recorded in the presence of the SDM.
Based on the allegations made by the family and the findings from the investigation, an FIR was registered at Khayala police station on June 25. A special team was formed under the leadership of the SHO Khayala and supervision of ACP Tilak Nagar to apprehend the accused. Utilizing local intelligence, technical evidence, and other leads, the police arrested Rohan (30), who sells utensils, and his father Rajesh (56).
During the police inquiry, it was revealed that Kajal had been persistently harassed for dowry and money since her marriage. Her family alleged that she faced mental and physical abuse when their demands were not met. Furthermore, she was subjected to taunts and harassment due to their inability to conceive even after three years of marriage.
Authorities believe that the ongoing harassment led Kajal to take this tragic step. Investigations into other aspects of the case are still ongoing.
