Shamli, June 26: In a significant police encounter in Shamli district’s Kandhla, notorious criminal Mohtab, also known as “Bechain,” was shot dead. The encounter occurred while another suspect managed to escape. During the gunfire, a sub-inspector sustained injuries. Shamli’s Superintendent of Police, N.P. Singh, provided details regarding the incident.
According to the SP, the police were responding to a robbery that took place the previous night, prompting them to register a case. The suspects were reported to have fled the scene on a motorcycle towards the Kandhla police station. Following this, a team led by the Kandhla SHO initiated a search operation. When cornered by the police, the criminals turned left, parked their motorcycle near a tube well, and opened fire on the police team.
The police team narrowly escaped the gunfire; however, Sub-Inspector Deepchand was seriously injured and has since been hospitalized. One of the criminals was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the other fled the scene.
The SP reported that a 9mm carbine, a pistol, and cartridges were recovered from the scene. The deceased criminal was identified as Mohtab, who had a bounty of ₹50,000 on his head. He was wanted in connection with the theft of a female constable’s earrings and chain that occurred on March 1. Two other suspects have already been jailed in this case, while the search for the escaped criminal continues.
In a separate incident in Ballia district, police engaged in a shootout with a history-sheeter involved in cattle smuggling near the Greenfield Expressway. The suspect was shot in the right leg during the police’s retaliatory fire.
According to police reports, they attempted to stop a black Scorpio vehicle carrying the history-sheeter based on a tip-off. The suspect attempted to flee towards Kinara Ghat. As the police pursued him, he fired at them with the intent to kill. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring the suspect, identified as Madan Mohan, also known as “W,” a notorious cattle smuggler with 18 registered cases against him.
Police recovered a country-made pistol, a live cartridge, and an empty shell from the suspect’s possession, along with the unregistered Scorpio vehicle. Legal actions are underway.
Ballia’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Verma, confirmed the encounter, stating that the police had set up a blockade based on intelligence. The suspect, realizing he was cornered, fired at the police team, resulting in his injury. He has been sent to the district hospital for treatment.
