Oslo, May 18: Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation between India and Norway amidst rising geopolitical tensions and increasing protectionism. During a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he highlighted the necessity of maintaining a rules-based international order. Støre urged both nations to unite against those who weaponize diplomacy, trade, and technology.
“We must stand against those who use diplomacy, trade, and technology as weapons. In these times of rising protectionism and heightened geopolitical dynamics, it is more crucial than ever to stand together for a rules-based order. Today, we have discussed significant issues such as the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. I appreciate the direct contact between Norwegian and Indian diplomats in addressing and resolving these matters,” he stated.
Støre acknowledged that while India and Norway may not always agree on every issue, both remain steadfast democratic partners who manage their differences through respectful dialogue. “India does not always agree on every issue. No one does. We are both respectful democracies that handle these matters according to democratic standards. However, what unites us today is more important: the belief that cooperation yields better outcomes than unilateralism and isolation, especially when it comes to global challenges,” he added.
Highlighting the significance of Modi’s visit to Norway, Støre remarked that in a world filled with uncertainty, rapid change, and growing differences, it is vital to deepen engagement with countries that share similar values. He asserted that shared democratic principles are more important than differing perspectives.
“In times of uncertainty, polarization, and conflicts, it is essential to strengthen and build connections with countries that hold similar internal values. Differences may exist, but they are minor compared to the major challenges facing the world, and we need to work together. Partnerships matter, especially among democracies with aligned interests that adhere to similar rules in the global community,” he stated.
Støre concluded by emphasizing the necessity of Modi’s visit, which symbolizes the growing partnership between India and Norway and their shared desire to strengthen cooperation across various sectors. “We may differ in geography, culture, size, and history, but we can achieve much by working together. Today, we will sign and highlight several agreements that will advance this partnership,” he said.
He also noted that India and Norway are expanding their relationship into a green strategic partnership, creating a framework for collaboration on knowledge, resources, and ambitions for a green transition, where both countries are equally committed to success.
