Tamil Nadu Congress Firmly Opposes Mekedatu Dam Amid Ongoing Cauvery Dispute

Chennai, July 2: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has taken a strong stance against the proposed Mekedatu Dam by Karnataka, vowing to continue its fight against the project. The party views the dam as a threat to the rights of farmers in Tamil Nadu and a violation of court orders.

This resolution was one of three key proposals passed during a meeting of district Congress committee presidents at the Satyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai. The meeting was chaired by the newly appointed president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and MP Manickam Tagore, with leadership from Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister and Congress Legislative Party leader S. Rajesh Kumar.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee stated that the proposed Mekedatu Dam contradicts the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court‘s 2018 ruling. Supporting Manickam Tagore’s recent statements, the party asserted that no construction would proceed without Tamil Nadu’s consent.

The party reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of farmers in the Cauvery Delta and will continue to oppose Karnataka’s dam construction efforts. Another proposal congratulated Manickam Tagore on his appointment as president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.

The meeting highlighted that this appointment was announced by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal under the directives of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

The proposal noted that since losing power in Tamil Nadu in 1967, Congress has been part of coalition governments but has not participated in government until now. With two ministers in the current government led by Chief Minister Vijay, the party is entering a new era after nearly six decades.

The meeting expressed confidence that Tagore would strengthen the organization, expand the Congress voter base, and help achieve the goal of winning all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

District Congress leaders also pledged full cooperation. The third proposal praised the performance of the TVK coalition government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, noting significant achievements within just two months.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee highlighted that Chief Minister Vijay has formed a secular government with the support of Congress, VCK, the Indian Union Muslim League, and left parties, rather than relying on AIADMK support.

The party commended the government for implementing various schemes, including 200 units of free electricity, loan waivers for small and marginal farmers, special packages for Kuruvai farming, an expanded breakfast scheme for students up to class 8, a special task force for women, anti-drug campaigns, and efforts to boost investment.

The party stated that despite financial challenges, Chief Minister Vijay has demonstrated strong leadership and is poised to become a significant force in Tamil Nadu politics.
