Mumbai, July 2: Reju Dutta, the suspended spokesperson of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), addressed various issues on Thursday. Speaking at Bhawanipur, he revealed that he was summoned as a witness in the ongoing DJ case against Abhishek Banerjee. The CBI had issued a notice for his appearance, and he confirmed his cooperation with the CID officials during the inquiry. “I provided all the information I had,” he stated.
When asked if he had been called again by the CID, Dutta replied that he had not received another summons yet. “If they call me again, I will definitely come,” he assured.
Commenting on Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s statements, Dutta suggested that Reddy should review his and Mamata Banerjee’s political track records. “Revanth Reddy is a Congress Chief Minister backed by major leaders like Rahul Gandhi. If Mamata Banerjee can lose to the BJP, defeating Reddy would not be a significant achievement for them. I’m not saying he will lose, but it’s not a big deal. TMC’s defeat stemmed from overconfidence,” he explained.
Dutta advised Reddy to focus on fighting against the BJP, emphasizing that public support is crucial for victory. “If the people stand with you, you will win; if not, you will lose,” he added.
Regarding the meeting of TMC rebel MLA Ritabrata Banerjee’s faction with Election Commission (ECI) officials in New Delhi, Dutta questioned their numbers and legitimacy. “Do they have the numbers? Are they recognized by the National Working Committee? They are heading to the ECI’s full bench; we will see what principles emerge,” he remarked.
On the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Dutta supported Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s cabinet meeting, stating that a UCC should be implemented. “The country is one, the Constitution is one, and the tricolor is one. The opposition claims that the UCC is being imposed, which is incorrect. Every individual has the right to practice their religion, and UCC has no relation to religion. One nation, one Constitution, one tricolor, so there should be one law,” he asserted.
Addressing incidents of eggs being thrown at leaders in Bengal, Dutta condemned such behavior, stating it has no place in a civilized society. “The High Court has opposed this. BJP President Samik Bhattacharya and the Chief Minister of Bengal have also condemned it. The police should take action. The people of Bengal did not want such changes, and if a woman or MP is not safe, what does that say?” he questioned.
He noted that those throwing eggs are tarnishing the image of the new government, which is working hard for the state’s progress.
On the two-day visit of the Lok Sabha Speaker to West Bengal and meetings with newly elected MLAs, Dutta described it as a training program. “Central Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Lok Sabha Speaker, and the Speaker of Bengal will be present. Most of the newly elected MLAs are first-timers, so this training program is essential. If it helps them serve the people of Bengal better, what’s wrong with that?”
