New Delhi, April 2: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has recently resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council, is expected to take the oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10. Following this, he may resign from his chief ministerial position after the conclusion of Kharmas. Sources close to the Chief Minister’s residence have provided this information.
According to these sources, Nitish Kumar will travel from Patna to Delhi on April 8 or 9 to take his oath. His resignation from the chief minister’s role could occur anytime after April 13, as Kharmas ends on April 14.
This move by Nitish Kumar could lead to a change in leadership in Bihar. However, the situation regarding his resignation remains unclear.
Previously, on March 30, Nitish Kumar resigned from the Legislative Council. He has already been declared elected to the Rajya Sabha, making his resignation from the Legislative Council constitutionally necessary. Nitish Kumar has been a member of the Legislative Council since 2006 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16.
He is among the few leaders who have served in all four houses of the legislature. During his campaign for the Rajya Sabha, he expressed his desire to be elected to this house, which influenced his decision.
Nitish Kumar first entered the assembly in 1985 from the Harnaut constituency and was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989.
He has held significant positions in the central government, including Minister of Railways and Minister of Agriculture, where he implemented extensive reforms in the railway sector. Since 2005, he has been at the helm as the Chief Minister of Bihar, earning the title of ‘Su-Shasan Babu’ (Good Governance Man). His tenure has seen the introduction of several notable initiatives, including alcohol prohibition, a bicycle scheme, and 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions.
