The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed that only two cases of Nipah virus infection have been reported in West Bengal since December last year.
The ministry expressed concern over circulating rumours and inaccurate data related to the Nipah virus in the media. An official statement clarified that several reports have been misleading.
According to the ministry, a total of 196 contacts of the two confirmed patients were identified. The National Centre for Disease Control monitored and tested all these individuals. None showed symptoms, and all reports came back negative for the virus.
The ministry emphasised that no new cases of Nipah virus have emerged beyond these two confirmed instances. Following confirmation, the central government, in coordination with the West Bengal government, promptly implemented necessary health protocols. Surveillance was intensified, and joint efforts by central and state health agencies ensured laboratory and field investigations were conducted effectively, helping to contain the situation in time.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have taken all required public health measures. The ministry appealed to the public and media to rely only on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed or speculative news.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection, meaning it spreads from animals to humans and can also transmit between humans. The virus spreads through contact with the saliva, urine, or other bodily fluids of an infected person.
Fruit bats are the primary carriers of the virus, which can cause severe respiratory illness and encephalitis (brain inflammation). Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment available for Nipah virus infection.
