Banswara, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken immediate notice of a troubling incident reported in Banswara, Rajasthan, where a woman was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated. According to media reports, the woman faced violence after being accused of leaving her home with another man. Her husband and relatives reportedly cut her hair, beat her with sticks, and paraded her in a semi-nude state.
The NHRC stated that if the reports are accurate, this case represents a serious violation of the victim’s rights to life and dignity. Consequently, the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan and the Superintendent of Police in Banswara, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
This report is expected to include information on the status of the investigation and any compensation offered to the victim, if applicable. The incident reportedly took place on September 1, and it gained attention when a video of the event went viral on social media on September 4.
The NHRC, a premier institution dedicated to human rights, condemned the brutal and inhumane treatment the woman endured at the hands of her husband and relatives in front of others. Established under the Human Rights Protection Act of 1993, the NHRC is an autonomous statutory body that reflects India’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. Its primary role is to safeguard individual rights related to life, liberty, equality, and dignity, as guaranteed by the Constitution and international agreements enforceable in Indian courts.
The NHRC also has the authority to take cognizance of human rights violations based on media reports or public information, even without formal complaints.
