Mumbai, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated on September 15 that the Maharashtra government has consistently adopted a positive stance towards the legitimate demands of the Maratha community. He emphasized that efforts to secure justice for them will not come at the expense of other communities, including the OBCs.
Speaking to reporters, Shinde mentioned ongoing discussions involving the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, district collectors, police superintendents, and Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil. He noted that some cases are currently in court, but the government is fully prepared to negotiate within legal and constitutional boundaries to resolve these issues.
Recalling the history of reservation, Shinde pointed out that the decision to grant reservation to the Maratha community was first made in 2014 under then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This was later upheld through judicial processes, allowing for 12% reservation in education and 13% in jobs. However, he acknowledged that the reservation could not be maintained after a change in government. Upon returning to power, the government fulfilled its promise made under the oath of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by convening a special assembly session to grant 10% reservation, which is now benefiting students and youth.
Shinde also highlighted the government’s firm stance regarding the 5,300 candidates whose appointments were halted due to court orders. He expressed readiness to face any repercussions if these affected youths secure employment.
He elaborated on various supportive measures implemented by the state, including increasing loan limits for the Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation, constructing hostels, providing scholarships for education abroad, and establishing the Justice Shinde Committee to issue certificates to verified Kunbi record holders, benefiting millions.
“The government has made every possible effort for the Maratha community while staying within legal and constitutional limits,” Shinde asserted. He urged protesters to adopt a positive approach, especially since some matters are still pending in court.
Shinde stressed the importance of prioritizing education and employment for underprivileged youth and cautioned against political opportunism behind the movement. He recalled the peaceful protests previously conducted by the Maratha community and appealed to organizers to ensure that the upcoming Ganeshotsav celebrations proceed without disruption. Acknowledging the influx of millions of devotees to Mumbai from across the country and abroad, he urged everyone to respect the convenience of citizens and pilgrims, assuring that the government and police are taking necessary precautions.
On the topic of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Shinde reiterated the Mahayuti government’s alignment with Balasaheb Thackeray’s vision of “one nation, one law, and equal justice for all.” He referenced recent statements from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, confirming that the Maharashtra government maintains a positive outlook on the UCC and will take decisive steps in this direction at the appropriate time.
