Jaipur, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Rajasthan Panchayati Raj Department has announced the postponement of the reservation lottery for the upcoming Panchayat elections, originally scheduled for September 17 and 18. This decision comes as the process for urban local body elections, which includes the election of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, is still underway.
The department informed the state election commission that the lottery will not take place on the previously announced dates. The ongoing election-related activities have made it challenging for officials to manage the reservation process simultaneously for Panchayati Raj institutions.
According to the earlier schedule, the reservation lottery for district council members, heads, and committee members was set for September 17, followed by the lottery for sarpanch and ward member positions on September 18. This lottery is crucial as it determines the reservation status for various electoral constituencies and positions, including those reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, women, and other applicable categories.
With the postponement, potential candidates will have to wait longer to learn whether their seats will remain open or fall under reserved categories. A message sent to the state election commission indicated that a new schedule for the reservation lottery will be established only after the completion of the elections for urban local bodies.
This means that the process for the Panchayati Raj elections will only advance once the remaining phases of the urban local body elections are concluded. The delay is primarily an administrative decision aimed at ensuring that district-level officials can fulfill their current electoral responsibilities before commencing the next major electoral process.
