Gariaband, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of alarming reports regarding schoolchildren in Gariaband district, Chhattisgarh. According to these reports, numerous children are forced to cross a river using a precarious iron ladder attached to an incomplete bridge to reach their school.
If the media accounts are accurate, this situation raises serious human rights concerns. In response, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
Children from the Khambatha area and nearby settlements in the Manpur block must climb this narrow and slippery ladder to cross the Pari River. The river, which is relatively shallow, becomes treacherous during the monsoon season, making the crossing particularly dangerous for the young students.
Reports indicate that construction of a 300-meter-long bridge between Deharaguda and Khambatha in the Manpur block has been ongoing for the past six years. Authorities had assured villagers about a year ago that the bridge would be completed in six months. However, the work remains unfinished, leaving schoolchildren and local residents to navigate this perilous route.
Established under the Human Rights Protection Act of 1993, the NHRC is an autonomous statutory body that reflects India’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. Its primary mission is to safeguard and enhance human rights, which encompass rights related to life, liberty, equality, and dignity, guaranteed by the Constitution and enforceable in Indian courts.
The NHRC has the authority to act on human rights violations without formal complaints, utilizing media reports, public information, or other sources to take proactive measures.
