New Delhi, March 30: The Rouse Avenue Court will hear the case against Sonia Gandhi regarding alleged illegal inclusion in the voter list on April 18. A complaint has been filed against her for supposedly adding her name to the voter list without obtaining Indian citizenship. The petitioner has requested an investigation and the filing of a case.
Today, the court heard a revision petition filed by lawyer Vikas Tripathi. The petitioner’s lawyer completed their arguments, but Sonia Gandhi’s side was unable to finish theirs. The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 18.
During the proceedings, the Rouse Avenue Court posed several questions to the petitioner’s lawyer. The court noted that this case is nearly half a century old and questioned the basis for requesting an FIR. It also inquired about the level and manner of the investigation, pointing out that the information provided today was limited to the circumstances of adding and removing names.
In response, the petitioner’s lawyer stated that this is a case of false declaration by a foreign national. They informed the court that they are trying to prove that Sonia Gandhi’s name could only have been included in the 1980 voter list through forged documents or fraud. The lawyer mentioned that they had requested verified copies of the voter list, which have been provided. They claimed that prima facie evidence of false declaration exists, warranting an investigation into the forged documents and fraud.
The petition alleges that Sonia Gandhi acquired Indian citizenship on April 30, 1983, yet her name was already included in the 1980 New Delhi voter list. According to the petition, her name was removed from the list in 1982. When her citizenship was granted in 1983, questions arose about the documents presented for her inclusion in 1980 and whether fraudulent documents were used.
In the previous hearing, Sonia Gandhi’s response labeled the petition as baseless, politically motivated, and an abuse of legal process. In September 2025, the magistrate court dismissed this petition, prompting Vikas Tripathi to file a revision petition.
