
Hamilton, March 17: New Zealand secured a convincing victory over South Africa by 68 runs in the second T20 International held at Sedon Park on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 176 runs, South Africa collapsed for just 107 runs in 15.3 overs. This win allowed New Zealand to level the series at 1-1.
New Zealand’s innings did not start well as wicketkeeper-batsman Connor Astle managed only 8 runs off 12 balls before being dismissed. Vian Mulder also fell for 16 runs, becoming a victim of Mitchell Santner. Tony de Georghi’s performance was disappointing, scoring just 1 run from 4 balls. Rubin Hermann contributed 19 runs off 12 balls, while Jason Smith returned to the pavilion with only 12 runs, caught by Ben Sears off Santner’s bowling.
George Linde showed some resistance with 33 runs off 12 balls, but he lacked support from the other batsmen. Keshav Maharaj and Nakobani Mokoeana both went out without scoring. On the bowling front, Ben Sears was exceptional for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Lockie Ferguson also shone, claiming 3 wickets for 16 runs in his 3.3 overs.
Earlier, after losing the toss, New Zealand batted first and scored 175 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs. Devon Conway was the standout performer, scoring 60 runs off 49 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. Tom Latham was dismissed for 11 runs, while Tim Robinson was clean bowled by George Linde for just 1 run. Nick Kelly added 21 runs from 12 balls, and captain Mitchell Santner contributed 20 runs off 14 balls. In the final overs, Josh Clarkson made a quick-fire 26 runs off just 9 balls. For South Africa, Vian Mulder took the most wickets, claiming 2, while Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj each took one wicket.
