Visakhapatnam: New Zealand secured their first victory in the ongoing T20 series against India by winning the fourth match at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. The Kiwi team defeated India by 50 runs on Wednesday, although India had already sealed the series ahead of this game.
After losing the toss, New Zealand decided to bat and posted a competitive total of 215 runs for seven wickets. Their opening pair laid a strong foundation with a century partnership.
Devon Conway and Tim Seifert put on a 100-run stand in just 8.2 overs. Both batsmen took only 8.1 overs to reach the century mark, setting a record for the fastest century by any team against India in T20 matches on Indian soil.
Conway scored 44 runs off 23 balls, including three sixes and four boundaries before getting out. Seifert then took charge, contributing 62 runs off 36 balls with three sixes and seven fours.
Later, Glenn Phillips added 24 runs, and Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten on 39 runs from 18 balls, helping New Zealand reach 215/7. For India, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi claimed one wicket apiece.
Chasing 216, the Indian innings faltered and ended at 165 runs in 18.4 overs. India lost Abhishek Sharma on the very first ball without scoring, followed shortly by captain Suryakumar Yadav, who made 8 runs.
Rinku Singh and Sanju Samson steadied the innings with a 46-run partnership in 28 balls for the third wicket. Sanju scored 24 runs off 15 balls with four boundaries, while Rinku contributed 39 runs in 30 balls, including two sixes and three fours before getting out.
At 82 runs for five wickets, the Indian side was under pressure. However, Shivam Dube played a vital role in reducing the margin of defeat by sharing a 63-run partnership with Harshit Rana in 27 balls.
Dube reached his half-century in just 15 balls, becoming the third fastest Indian to score a fifty in T20 international cricket. Unfortunately, he was run out on 65 runs, having struck seven sixes and three boundaries in his 23-ball innings.
Mitchell Santner was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking three wickets. Jacob Duffy and Ish Sodhi took two wickets each, while Matt Henry and Jakari Falks claimed one wicket apiece.
India leads the five-match T20 series 3-1. The final match is scheduled to be played on 31 January in Thiruvananthapuram.
