New Airport in Adilabad to Facilitate Joint Defense-Civilian Operations

Hyderabad, April 9: The Union Minister of Civil Aviation, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, announced on Wednesday that a new airport will be constructed in Adilabad, Telangana, dedicated to defense purposes, while also accommodating civilian flights.

Currently, the defense department operates a runway spanning 360 acres in Adilabad. However, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has requested the state government to acquire an additional 450 acres for the new airport.

The proposed facility will feature a runway capable of handling Airbus A320 aircraft. This decision was made during a meeting in New Delhi, attended by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, and Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy.

Also present were Adilabad MP G. Nagesh, MLA Payal Shankar, officials from the Ministry of Defense, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and representatives from the state government.

Following the meeting, Ram Mohan Naidu informed the media that the Defense Ministry has expressed no objections to developing the airport in a joint venture with AAI.

He stated, “Recognizing the strategic importance of this location, the Defense Ministry has decided to establish a training facility for defense personnel here. They will develop the airport and provide a separate section for civilian flights.”

The Civil Aviation Minister noted that there are already 36 such defense airports across the country with designated areas for civilian operations. He emphasized that joint operations by civilian and defense sectors have proven successful nationwide.

He announced that a team from the Defense Ministry, AAI, and state government officials will visit the site on April 17 to study the ‘Obstacle Limitation Surface’ (OLS). Following this, a ‘master plan’ will be developed, which will require approval from the Defense Ministry.

Ram Mohan Naidu mentioned that as soon as the state government acquires the necessary land, the foundation stone for the airport can be laid, allowing work to commence promptly.

He highlighted that the development of the airport in Adilabad will fulfill a long-standing desire of the local population. He described Adilabad as an ideal location for the airport, predicting a significant demand for air services in the future.

Furthermore, he stated that this airport will transform the region into a hub and boost the local economy. Currently, there are no nearby airports; the Hyderabad Airport, Telangana’s only civilian airport, is located 300 kilometers away, while Nagpur Airport is 170 kilometers from Adilabad.
