Srinagar, April 8: Security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir successfully detected and neutralized an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by terrorists. Officials reported this development on Wednesday.
The IED was discovered on the Jainpora-Chitragam road during a routine area clearance operation early in the morning. It was intended to target security force vehicles passing through that route.
Traffic on the Jainpora-Chitragam road was halted temporarily as a bomb disposal squad was summoned to safely deactivate the IED.
Improvised explosive devices, commonly referred to as IEDs, are often used by insurgent or terrorist groups to destroy property and cause harm to individuals. These devices are typically constructed using conventional military components, chemicals, or leftover explosives.
IEDs are frequently employed in unconventional warfare, often hidden as roadside bombs or concealed within vehicles. They consist of a switch, a detonator, an explosive charge, and a container, ranging from small pipe bombs to large vehicle-borne IEDs (VBIEDs) capable of causing significant destruction.
These explosives, found along roadsides, in bridges, or buried beneath surfaces, pose a severe threat to both security forces and civilians, contributing significantly to casualty figures in conflicts worldwide.
To counter these threats, security forces often deploy bomb disposal squads (BDS).
