Neeraj Chopra Must Qualify for Commonwealth Games: AFI

New Delhi, June 14: Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is included in the provisional list released by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). However, his spot in India’s athletics team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games is not guaranteed.

Following the announcement of a 32-member squad for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, AFI spokesperson and World Athletics vice president Adille Sumariwalla stated in a virtual press conference that Chopra is the only selected athlete who still needs to achieve the necessary qualification mark.

Sumariwalla mentioned, “Neeraj must qualify. All other selected athletes have already qualified. Selva has qualified, but if we are to consider him, he needs to be very close to his qualifying mark, as we do not have current information about his status. He has expressed his desire to participate and wants to qualify at the inter-state level.”

While Chopra is expected to compete before the Commonwealth Games, the federation is still awaiting updates on his return to competition after recovering from an injury.

Providing an update on Neeraj’s injury, Sumariwalla said, “He is now fit for training and is likely preparing for competition in the next 10 days. We are waiting. Additionally, Jyoti is recovering well and is also fit for training. She needs to be fit for competition.”

Neeraj is a world champion athlete for India, and the Indian Athletics Federation certainly hopes he successfully qualifies for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
