With this victory, the USA became the second team to advance to the Round of 32. From the outset of the match held at Seattle Stadium, the USA displayed aggressive play, consistently applying pressure on Australia’s defense. The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Australian defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently scored an own goal while trying to block a shot from Folarin Balogun, giving the USA a 1-0 lead.
