New Delhi, June 20: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 started with a bang, but the Delhi Capitals (DC) faltered and failed to secure a playoff spot once again. With 7 wins out of 14 matches, DC finished in sixth place. Following this disappointing performance, significant changes are anticipated for the upcoming season (IPL 2027). Reports suggest that former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh may join the DC coaching staff.
If this materializes, it would mark Yuvraj’s debut as a coach. Since retiring from cricket in 2019, he has not officially joined any team in a coaching capacity.
The ownership of the Delhi Capitals lies with the JSW Group and the GMR Group, which manage the team in alternating two-year cycles. The GMR Group had full control over DC during IPL 2025 and IPL 2026, making all key decisions, including the selection of the coach and captain. For the next two seasons (IPL 2027 and IPL 2028), management will revert to the JSW Group, indicating that changes in both the captaincy and coaching staff are likely.
Reports indicate that former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly could lead the new coaching team, with Yuvraj Singh potentially being a part of it.
In the past two seasons, Axar Patel served as DC’s captain, while Hemang Badani was the head coach. Under their leadership, the team’s performance was underwhelming. There are speculations about Rishabh Pant‘s return, who might be reinstated as captain, with Sourav Ganguly taking on the head coach role.
Yuvraj Singh is regarded as one of India’s most successful cricketers, playing a pivotal role in India’s triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Known for his explosive batting, agile fielding, and useful spin bowling, Yuvraj has never held an official coaching position. However, he has guided current Indian team captain Shubman Gill and T20 opener Abhishek Sharma to significant international success. He has also mentored Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, providing direction to Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant during challenging times. If Yuvraj joins the DC coaching staff, the team could present a fresh and dynamic approach in the next season.
