
Doha, June 20: In the Doha Diamond League held at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium, Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra fell short of securing a spot in the top three, finishing in fourth place. His best throw of the day was 85.69 meters, achieved in his third attempt. A silver lining for Neeraj is that he has qualified for the Commonwealth Games. Sri Lanka’s Rumes Pathirage took first place with a throw of 88.68 meters.
This event marked Neeraj’s first Diamond League appearance of the season as he returns from injury. His start was disappointing, with his first throw being a foul. In his second attempt, he managed a throw of 82.77 meters, securing his spot for the Commonwealth Games, where a throw of 82.61 meters was required.
In the third round, Neeraj achieved a throw of 85.69 meters, moving him into the top three momentarily. After the third round, he was in third place, behind Grenada’s Anderson Peters (86.38 meters) and America’s Curtis Thompson (85.99 meters).
In his fourth attempt, Neeraj threw 83.45 meters but dropped out of the top three. Rumes Pathirage solidified his lead with an impressive 88.68-meter throw in this round. Neeraj’s fifth attempt was also a foul, preventing him from qualifying for the final round.
The final standings saw Rumes Pathirage (88.68 meters) in first, Anderson Peters (86.38 meters) in second, Curtis Thompson (85.99 meters) in third, and Neeraj Chopra (85.69 meters) in fourth. Arthur Felfner (83.62 meters) and Julius Yego (82.22 meters) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
