NDMC Vice Chairman Urges Citizens to Care for Plants Until They Grow into Trees

New Delhi, August 23: Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), launched the “One Tree in the Name of Mother” campaign on Sunday by planting trees at a multi-story housing complex in Aliganj. He urged residents to continue caring for the plants until they mature into trees.

According to an official statement, this event marks the 38th consecutive Sunday of the campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide appeal, “One Tree in the Name of Mother.”

Chahal noted that the sustained participation over 38 Sundays indicates that environmental conservation is gradually becoming a people’s movement. He emphasized that the campaign aims to ensure ongoing involvement rather than limiting tree-planting activities to a single day or occasion.

A significant number of youths, local residents, women, children, representatives from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and NDMC officials participated in the tree-planting initiative.

During the event, Chahal stated that the campaign is not just about planting in the soil; it is about fostering a personal connection between citizens and the trees around them.

He remarked, “Planting a sapling takes just a few minutes, but nurturing it into a tree requires years of care. Our true responsibility begins after planting. Each sapling needs water, protection, and regular maintenance to thrive.”

Chahal praised the enthusiastic participation of the youth, highlighting their crucial role in fostering an environmentally conscious generation. He explained that when young citizens actively engage in planting and caring for trees, the message of environmental conservation spreads to every home and neighborhood.

He emphasized the unique strength of the “One Tree in the Name of Mother” campaign lies in its emotional connection. By dedicating a tree in honor of their mothers, participants transform environmental protection into a personal commitment.

Chahal stated, “Our mothers care for us throughout our lives. By planting a tree in their name and nurturing it, we show the same spirit of care for nature. The tree we protect today can provide shade, clean air, and a healthy environment for someone tomorrow.”

He called on residents and RWAs to adopt a simple three-step resolution: plant, protect, and care. He urged citizens not to consider their responsibility fulfilled after planting but to regularly monitor the plants, ensure they receive water, protect them from harm, and assist in their survival during the early growth years.

During the event, local residents and RWA representatives raised several civic and maintenance issues related to the housing complex, including seepage, window repairs, and other maintenance concerns.

Chahal directed the relevant NDMC officials to investigate on-site and address the issues raised by residents within a specified timeframe. He noted that regular communication with RWAs and citizens provides valuable insights into grassroots needs, helping NDMC respond more effectively to local problems.
