NDA to Allocate 34% Tickets to Backward Classes in Local Body Elections, Says Chandrababu Naidu

Amaravati, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced on Friday that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will allocate 34% of tickets to backward classes (BC) in the upcoming local body elections. This decision follows the Supreme Court‘s dismissal of a state government petition challenging a High Court ruling that had annulled the 34% reservation for BCs in local bodies.

Speaking at a public gathering after distributing land title documents in Narsingolu, Prakasam district, Naidu emphasized that the ruling alliance plans to field more than 34% candidates from the BC community.

His remarks came after the Andhra Pradesh High Court canceled two government orders that provided 34% reservation for backward classes in local body elections on October 1. The court noted that, per Supreme Court guidelines, total reservations for all categories in local bodies should not exceed 50%.

Naidu had previously announced on August 18 that the BC community would receive 34% reservation in rural local bodies and 33.33% in urban local bodies. He stated that the BC community constitutes more than 50% of society and has been a vital support base for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for the last 45 years.

The Chief Minister highlighted the efforts made to uplift the BC community politically, economically, and socially. He recalled that NTR had implemented a 24% reservation for BCs in local bodies, which he later increased to 34%. However, he claimed that the previous government reverted it back to 24%.

Naidu criticized the YSR Congress Party for taking legal action to block the increase in reservations. He accused the party of harboring animosity toward the BC community but reiterated that the NDA would still allocate 34% of seats to them.

During the event, Naidu distributed land title documents under the ‘Mee Bhoomi-Mee Hakku’ program, stating that the government is committed to delivering error-free documents. So far, over 40.58 lakh title documents have been distributed, with more than 4 lakh given to farmers in 790 villages just this October.

Targeting the YSR Congress Party, Naidu alleged that the previous government failed to ensure land security, leading to increased fear and problems for citizens. He expressed confidence that the two-engine government would address these issues and drive development.
