Kolkata, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a significant victory in the Rejinagar by-election held in West Bengal. After the completion of all 15 rounds of counting for the 70-Rejinagar assembly constituency, BJP candidate Shankharavah Sarkar secured 129,914 votes, leaving his opponents far behind.

According to the Election Commission’s data, Sarkar garnered a remarkable lead of 75,816 votes over his nearest rival. Golam Nabi Azad, also known as Robin, representing the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), received 54,098 votes, while Abdullahil Kafi from the Indian National Congress managed only 6,168 votes.

AJUP leader Humayun Kabir had recently surprised many by winning two seats in Murshidabad district, including Rejinagar. However, he chose to retain the Nauda seat, prompting the need for the by-election in Rejinagar.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari congratulated Sarkar on his victory, describing it as “a historic mandate” in a post on X. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the informed voters of Rejinagar, acknowledging the overwhelming support from mothers, sisters, youth, farmers, and the elderly.

Adhikari emphasized that this mandate signifies a major shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. He noted that the victory reflects the unwavering trust of the people in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership and endorses the state government’s welfare initiatives, inclusive development, and transparent governance.

The Chief Minister pointed out that voters opted for progress, welfare, and empowerment over divisive politics. He also praised the party workers and leadership for their tireless efforts that made this victory possible, assuring that the government is fully committed to the comprehensive development of Rejinagar.
