Patna, March 28: A significant constitutional and political development is unfolding in Bihar following Nitish Kumar’s election to the Rajya Sabha. After receiving his election certificate on March 16, Kumar is now required to resign from one of his positions within 14 days as per constitutional provisions.
Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of his Rajya Sabha membership. Speculation is mounting that he may resign from the Bihar Legislative Council around March 30.
Confirming this situation, senior Janata Dal (United) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the decision will be made in accordance with constitutional mandates. He praised Kumar’s leadership, highlighting his transformation from the 2005 ‘Nyay Yatra’ to the current ‘Samriddhi Yatra,’ emphasizing his continuous focus on development.
Meanwhile, Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar reiterated the constitutional requirement that any elected representative holding dual membership must resign from one position within the stipulated 14 days. He also noted that BJP leader Nitin Naveen must resign within the same timeframe.
This development has intensified political speculation in the state, with many linking Kumar’s potential resignation from the Assembly to his future role and the possibility of a leadership change in Bihar.
Amid the current political landscape, Sanjay Kumar Jha also addressed national and international concerns, particularly the evolving situation in Iran. He mentioned that the Indian government has convened a meeting of all parties to discuss the matter.
According to him, India has maintained stability despite rising global petroleum prices, thanks to measures such as reducing petroleum surcharges. He emphasized that India is actively engaged in diplomatic communications with both Iran and the United States, reflecting its strong and balanced foreign policy.
Jha cautioned against the spread of rumors, stating that misinformation during sensitive times can heighten public anxiety.
