The air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR) has deteriorated again, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) moving from the orange zone to the red zone in several areas. After fluctuating for days, the AQI now indicates a highly concerning level of pollution across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and the India Meteorological Department, AQI values in most parts of these cities range between 250 and 350, posing serious health risks.
In Ghaziabad, Indirapuram recorded an AQI of 240, while Loni reached a hazardous level of 362. Sanjay Nagar and Vasundhara showed AQI levels of 281 and 345 respectively. Greater Noida’s Knowledge Park-III and Knowledge Park-V reported AQI readings of 279 and 332.
Noida’s Sector-125 and Sector-1 both recorded AQI at 308, Sector-62 at 251, and Sector-116 at 316. Delhi’s situation remains severe with Anand Vihar at 344, Ashok Vihar at 305, Chandni Chowk at 350, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range at 325, and Patparganj at 328. Rohini and R.K. Puram both had AQI of 327. Okhla Phase-2 reported 318, Punjabi Bagh 305, Pusa 333, Siri Fort 328, and Sonia Vihar 320.
Some areas showed relatively better air quality, like Bawana with an AQI of 196 (yellow zone), Aya Nagar at 211, and Shadipur at 270. Meanwhile, schools from nursery to fifth grade reopened in Gautam Buddh Nagar from today, raising concerns among parents about children’s health amid worsening air conditions.
Experts advise that children, elderly individuals, and those with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions in the red zone. The India Meteorological Department has forecast dense to moderate fog in NCR from January 6 to 8. Temperatures are expected to remain with a maximum around 19°C and a minimum between 6 to 7°C, with a further drop in minimum temperature anticipated.
