Murshidabad, July 30: A POCSO court in Murshidabad, West Bengal, has sentenced two defendants, Karim Sheikh and Syed Tarjan Hussain, to life imprisonment. This ruling was made on Wednesday, alongside additional sentences for other crimes, which will run concurrently.
The case stems from post-election violence that erupted in West Bengal after the state assembly election results were announced in 2021. Following this, the Calcutta High Court ordered on August 19, 2021, that investigations into murder and crimes against women, particularly rape or attempted rape, be handed over to the CBI.
In compliance with this order, the CBI’s SCB Kolkata unit registered the case on May 27, 2022. The case was filed based on a written complaint from the victim’s father at the Farakka police station in Murshidabad, accusing Karim Sheikh and Syed Tarjan Hussain under IPC sections 376DA, 365, and section 6 of the POCSO Act.
After the trial, the court found both defendants guilty on July 28, 2026, and delivered the sentence on July 29, 2026. In addition to the life sentences, the Murshidabad District Legal Services Authority will provide the victim with a compensation of ₹500,000. Furthermore, proceeds from the sale of the defendants’ ambulance will also be awarded to the victim.
