Kolkata, July 30: A shocking incident has emerged from West Bengal‘s West Medinipur district, where the body of a professor was found hanging on the IIT Kharagpur campus.
According to police reports, Deepak Reddy Pullaguram, a 36-year-old assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, was originally from Hyderabad. Due to work commitments, he resided in a quarter on the IIT campus. His body was discovered in his room on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death to determine whether it was a suicide or if other factors were involved.
Sources from the campus indicated that Deepak had not responded to calls since the morning. Concerned officials alerted the police. Around 12:30 PM, officers from the Hijli outpost, under the Kharagpur Town police station, arrived at the scene. With the help of security guards, they entered the room and found Deepak hanging.
He was taken down and transported to BC Roy Hospital within the IIT campus, where he was pronounced dead. It remains unclear if a suicide note was found at the scene, and the police are actively investigating the case.
Currently, his residence has been sealed, and his family in Hyderabad has been notified. Investigators are interviewing security personnel, other residents of the quarter, and Deepak’s colleagues to gather more information. They are also conducting a search of his home.
Authorities are looking into whether Deepak faced any family issues or work-related stress. Papiya Sultana, the Superintendent of Police for West Midnapore district, stated, “A professor’s body was found hanging. It will be sent for a post-mortem. The cause and manner of death are under investigation.”
So far, there has been no official statement from IIT Kharagpur regarding the professor’s mysterious death. Sources within the institution noted that while there have been several cases of student suicides in recent years, the death of a professor on campus is unprecedented.
