Chandigarh, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Chandigarh has marked a significant achievement by securing convictions in a 2019 drug trafficking case involving the interstate smuggling of opium husk. On September 30, the special NDPS court in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, sentenced two traffickers, Muzaffar Ahmed Mir from Jammu and Kashmir and Charanjit Singh Chima from Hoshiarpur, to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment, along with fines of 200,000 rupees each.
The case dates back to June 26, 2019, when an NCB team thwarted an attempt to smuggle 500 kilograms of opium husk from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab. The drug was concealed in 20 bags hidden beneath scrap metal in a truck.
Following the seizure, the two convicted individuals and another accused, Sheikh, were apprehended. However, Sheikh later absconded after being granted bail. In December 2025, the court declared him a “proclaimed offender,” and efforts to capture him are ongoing.
This successful conviction underscores the NCB’s commitment to professional investigations and effective prosecutions in the fight against drug trafficking. The bureau remains dedicated to its mission of combating substance abuse and contributing to a drug-free India.
Earlier on September 26, the NCB announced that a special court in Uttar Pradesh sentenced nine drug traffickers to prison terms ranging from 10 to 20 years in connection with the seizure of 441 kilograms of marijuana in 2021. The drugs were cleverly hidden in a specially designed compartment in the truck driver’s cabin, originating from Gajapati in Odisha and destined for Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The NCB has since taken over the investigation, resulting in the arrest and conviction of seven additional suspects.
