Mumbai, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is calling for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Vivek Bhimanwar, the chairperson of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). Party president Harshvardhan Sapkal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining the country’s electoral system and weakening democratic institutions.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the historic Mani Bhavan on October 2, Sapkal emphasized that the Congress movement against institutional corruption would persist until key figures responsible for these issues step down. He was accompanied by Maharashtra Congress in-charge Sirivella Prasad during the press interaction.
Sapkal criticized Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that he operates as an “agent of the BJP.” He noted that the Election Commission had to retract arbitrary changes made to Form-6 following questions raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.
He questioned who granted the authority to a private entity to make decisions regarding elections. The Maharashtra Congress has previously raised concerns about the special intensive review of electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission.
Regarding the MPSC, Sapkal expressed full support for ongoing student protests against the commission. He described the commission’s performance as “extremely poor” and reiterated the demand for Bhimanwar’s resignation, asserting that the Congress stands firmly with the protesting youth.
Highlighting the historical significance of Mani Bhavan, Sapkal remarked that Mahatma Gandhi spent considerable time there during the freedom struggle. He stated that honoring Gandhi also means upholding constitutional values.
Sapkal further mentioned that Gandhi’s ideology reflects the legacies of figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Maharashtra’s saint tradition. He criticized the RSS ideology for promoting discrimination and urged the organization to establish the Constitution of India in its offices and dissolve itself.
On the issue of inflation, the Maharashtra Congress president compared the current government to the previous UPA administration. He pointed out that during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure, despite a global rise in fuel prices, petrol was kept around 70 rupees per liter and LPG cylinders at 450 rupees to ease the burden on the public.
Sapkal accused the Modi government of prioritizing the interests of select industrialists while ordinary citizens continue to bear the brunt of rising inflation.
