Beijing, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Tsong, addressed the General Assembly’s Third Committee on October 2, representing a coalition of 28 like-minded nations. He called for the international community to impose strict limitations on unilateral punitive measures.
Fu highlighted the alarming rise of unilateralism and the persistent application of such sanctions. He noted that history has shown these measures to be significant contributors to global disorder and disruptions in world order. He urged the international community to remain vigilant, strengthen solidarity, and effectively curb these illegal practices.
The representative emphasized that developing countries and their populations have long suffered from the adverse effects of unilateral sanctions. He argued that these measures violate the principles of sovereign equality and cooperation, interfere in the internal affairs of other nations, and contradict the objectives and principles of the UN Charter. Additionally, he stated that they are contrary to multilateralism and international law.
Fu pointed out that the international community has repeatedly called for the immediate removal of unilateral sanctions. Despite these appeals, such measures continue to severely impact affected nations and their citizens, often posing life-threatening challenges. He noted that unilateral sanctions, secondary restrictions, and excessive compliance exacerbate existing humanitarian and economic issues, significantly affecting food, energy, and financial security.
He reiterated the stance of the 28 countries opposing unilateral sanctions and urged certain Western nations to heed the international community’s just appeals and to withdraw all unilateral measures immediately and unconditionally.
