NC Leader Apologizes for Controversial Remarks on Maharaja Hari Singh

Reasi, July 17: In response to intense backlash over controversial remarks regarding Maharaja Hari Singh, National Conference (NC) leader Tariq Bhatt has publicly apologized and retracted his statement.

He stated that he respects the sentiments of the people of Jammu and, considering their feelings, he is withdrawing his words. Bhatt clarified that this was his personal opinion and does not reflect the stance of the National Conference.

“I participated in a large rally organized by the National Conference at Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu on July 12. During the event, media personnel asked me several questions. My responses were based on what I had read in books. However, some of my brothers did not appreciate my comments,” he explained.

He further added, “If the opinion of the entire Jammu region is unified and mine is different, then the voice of the people is more important. Therefore, I fully respect the sentiments of the people of Jammu and retract my words spoken on that occasion.”

On July 12, the National Conference held a significant public meeting demanding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. During this event, media inquiries related to Jammu and Kashmir’s history led to Bhatt’s remarks being widely interpreted as disrespectful towards Maharaja Hari Singh, triggering a strong reaction in the Jammu division.

In light of the escalating controversy, the Youth Rajput Sabha and the Reasi District Bar Association organized protests. Demonstrators burned effigies of the National Conference, condemned the statement, and warned of legal action if a public apology was not issued.

Amid growing dissent and public anger, Tariq Bhatt has now expressed regret over his statement and reaffirmed his respect for the sentiments of the people of Jammu.
