New Delhi, July 18: The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that its forces successfully destroyed a surveillance tower located at the Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar, Iran. This operation aims to weaken Iran’s maritime monitoring and coordination capabilities.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, CENTCOM stated, “On July 16, U.S. forces successfully destroyed the surveillance tower at the Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar. This tower was part of Iran’s maritime surveillance network along the coast of the Gulf of Oman. According to U.S. sources, this network has been utilized by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for decades to monitor and target commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The destruction of this tower directly hampers the IRGC’s ability to coordinate attacks on civilian crew members. Additionally, U.S. officials assert that this action will ensure safe and free passage for most vessels in regional maritime routes.
However, this does not apply to ships attempting to violate the existing naval blockade imposed by the U.S. against Iran.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also shared information about the attack on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday. Hegseth posted a photo of the surveillance tower collapsing at the Shahid Kalantari Port following the U.S. strike.
According to CENTCOM, the U.S. military has conducted attacks on Iranian positions for six consecutive days since President Donald Trump announced the end of a ceasefire in April.
Previously, the U.S. military reported firing missiles at an unmanned oil tanker attempting to approach an Iranian port in the Arabian Gulf, successfully thwarting the attempt.
