Srinagar, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a rebel leader of the National Conference (NC) and Member of Parliament, voiced strong criticism of his party on Friday. He stated that the NC has abandoned its fight against the amended Waqf Act and the imposition of certain verses of the national song “Vande Mataram.” Mehdi emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir should demonstrate greater sensitivity to the concerns of minorities.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mehdi expressed his disappointment after initially opposing the Waqf amendment, only to observe that his party had given up the struggle. He noted that other states, like Punjab and some in the south, had taken steps against such measures.
Mehdi also opposed the mandatory implementation of certain parts of “Vande Mataram,” labeling it as unconstitutional. He accused his party of capitulating to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
He stated, “At a time when minorities are being marginalized, we must not normalize the communal attacks from the RSS and BJP.” He urged people across India to stand up for minority rights.
Highlighting that Jammu and Kashmir is the largest Muslim-majority region in the country, Mehdi called for increased sensitivity towards the religious beliefs and concerns of minorities.
He remarked, “Jammu and Kashmir has a historical opportunity to stand for what is right. Let’s not squander this chance.” He stressed the need for wisdom, sensitivity, and courage in the current climate, rather than seeking further compromises.
The National Conference has previously criticized Mehdi for acting against the party’s interests. Party chief Farooq Abdullah has even challenged Mehdi to resign from the Lok Sabha and secure a victory based solely on his political strength. In response, Mehdi has announced plans to resign from both the party and the Lok Sabha on November 3.
