Nargis Dutt: From Aspiring Doctor to Bollywood Icon

Mumbai, May 31: Nargis Dutt is a name synonymous with the golden era of Indian cinema. When one thinks of Nargis, the character of Radha from ‘Mother India’ comes to mind. However, few know that she never aspired to be an actress. Her dream was to build a career in a different field. Yet, she stepped into the world of acting to fulfill her mother’s wishes.

Nargis dreamed of becoming a doctor and serving society. But her mother’s insistence led her to the film industry. A reluctant screen test with Mehboob Khan changed the course of her life.

Born as Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929, in Kolkata, Nargis was the daughter of Jaddanbai, a renowned singer, dancer, director, and actress of her time. Jaddanbai held a significant place in Indian cinema and wanted her daughter to follow in her footsteps, while Nargis was focused on her studies and her dream of becoming a doctor.

At just six years old, in 1935, Nargis made her film debut as a child artist in ‘Talash-e-Haq.’ Although this marked the beginning of her film career, she lacked passion for acting. One day, Jaddanbai sent her for a screen test with Mehboob Khan. Nargis attended the test reluctantly, hoping to be rejected so she could pursue her medical career. However, the opposite happened. Mehboob Khan was so impressed by her talent that he cast her as the lead in his 1943 film ‘Taqdeer.’

In 1945, she starred in ‘Humayun,’ but her true breakthrough came in 1949. Films like ‘Barsaat’ with Raj Kapoor and ‘Andaz’ with Dilip Kumar catapulted her to stardom. The pairing of Nargis and Raj Kapoor became a favorite among audiences, and her career soared.

The 1957 film ‘Mother India’ brought her international acclaim. Her powerful portrayal of Radha earned the film an Oscar nomination. ‘Mother India’ remains a classic in Indian cinema.

Nargis and Raj Kapoor’s collaboration is remembered as one of the most iconic pairings in Bollywood history. They worked together in films like ‘Awara,’ ‘Shree 420,’ ‘Chori Chori,’ and ‘Jagte Raho,’ with songs from these films still cherished by fans.

Beyond acting, Nargis contributed significantly to social causes. She married Sunil Dutt and later became active in politics. Nargis Dutt was not only a remarkable actress but also a strong and inspiring woman with a deep commitment to social service.
