Mumbai, August 25: Kuku Kohli, a prominent director in the Hindi film industry, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 77 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. His death has sent shockwaves through Bollywood and the film community.
Close associates of Kohli confirmed the news. Reports indicate that he was not suffering from any serious illness. He suffered a sudden heart attack and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.
Ashok Pandit expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “My heart is broken as I share the news of filmmaker Kuku Kohli’s passing. Today, I lost a very good friend and an exceptional filmmaker. This is a significant loss for the film industry. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Aruna Irani, and his daughters, Karishma Kohli and Pooja Kohli.”
According to Pandit, Kohli’s body will be available for last rites at Green Acres, Lokhandwala, at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, followed by the cremation at Oshiwara crematorium at 10:30 AM.
Kuku Kohli was associated with several major organizations in the film industry. He served as the General Secretary of the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association and held the position of Secretary General of the Indian Film and Television Directors Association.
Kohli made his directorial debut in 1991 with the film “Phool Aur Kaante,” which marked the first film for actor Ajay Devgn and became a significant box office success. He went on to direct films such as “Kohraam,” “Suhaag,” “Haqeeqat,” “Anari No. 1,” “Zulm,” “Ye Dil Aashiqana,” and “Wo Tera Naam Tha,” establishing a strong presence among audiences in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Kuku Kohli’s wife, Aruna Irani, is a celebrated actress in Hindi cinema. Their love story began in a cinematic fashion. Recently, on the reality show Indian Idol, Aruna Irani shared that initially, she and Kuku Kohli did not get along. What started as playful banter during shoots gradually blossomed into friendship and then love.
Aruna Irani is regarded as one of the most versatile actresses in Hindi cinema, having appeared in over 500 films.
