Guwahati, June 24: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the long-awaited Namrup Urea Plant project in eastern Assam is now on the right track, with expectations for its completion by 2028. This development marks a significant achievement for the state’s industrial and agricultural growth.
The proposed fertilizer plant, estimated to cost ₹11,000 crores, had been stalled for decades. However, under the current government, it has gained new momentum.
Sarma pointed out that one of the main reasons for the prolonged delay was the perception during the Congress-led previous government that the project site was too close to the international border. He alleged that despite its strategic importance to the region, concerns about the location had hindered progress on this major project for years.
The Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this project last year, paving the way for the long-awaited fertilizer unit to commence operations.
The Namrup project is expected to significantly increase urea production in the country, reducing dependence on fertilizer supplies from other regions. Officials believe that this plant will play a crucial role in providing timely fertilizers to farmers in Assam and the entire Northeast region.
The proposed unit is also anticipated to boost economic activities in the Dibrugarh district and surrounding areas, creating numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities.
This project is considered a vital part of the central government’s broader strategy aimed at strengthening industrial infrastructure and promoting self-sufficiency in fertilizer production.
Namrup already hosts large fertilizer plants and has long been regarded as one of Assam’s key industrial hubs. The new plant is expected to enhance this legacy, incorporating modern technology and improved production capabilities.
State government officials have repeatedly described this project as a revolutionary initiative that will aid agricultural development, improve fertilizer availability, and contribute to the economic growth of Assam and the Northeast.
