Nagaland Government Committed to Resolving Naga Political Issues: CM Rio

Kohima, March 3: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio reiterated on Tuesday that the state government remains committed to playing a constructive role in resolving the long-standing Naga political issues. He emphasized that he has actively supported ongoing negotiations, accelerated discussions, and created favorable conditions for a swift, permanent, and respectful resolution.

While participating in a motion of thanks to the Governor’s address in the Assembly, the Chief Minister of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) stated that the government is guided by the basic principles outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and expects continuous cooperation and active participation from the Eastern Naga Peoples Organization to advance this process.

Addressing the issue of playing the national anthem “Vande Mataram” in the Assembly, the Chief Minister noted that the views expressed by the legislators have been duly recorded and respected. Acknowledging the historical significance of the anthem, he stressed that the strength of the nation lies in its diversity, secular values, and adherence to constitutional principles.

Rio suggested that before making a decision on this matter, a select committee of the House should be tasked with a detailed investigation, including legal advice.

The Chief Minister also sought cooperation from elected members, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders to ensure a smooth census process in the state in 2027. He mentioned that a comprehensive briefing session would soon be organized for members and party officials to raise awareness about various aspects of this task.

Regarding issues of extortion and law and order, Rio affirmed that the government will maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities and will continue to take stringent measures to safeguard peace and security.

On the rationalization and redeployment of teachers, he stated that a detailed investigation is underway. He explained that demographic changes and a decline in student enrollment in certain areas necessitate steps to ensure effective utilization of teaching staff.

Acknowledging the challenges in marketing agricultural produce, Rio mentioned that the government is exploring ways to strengthen institutional systems to provide farmers with better market access and price support.

On unemployment, he highlighted ongoing skill development and entrepreneurship initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment, emphasizing the importance of promoting vocational and technical skills linked to emerging sectors like artificial intelligence and technology.

Rio condemned incidents of racial discrimination against people from the Northeast and stated that such actions go against the spirit of unity and inclusiveness. Reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ dignity and rights, he called for collective responsibility in upholding these values.

Regarding the foothill road project, he noted that discussions have taken place with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, although issues related to land acquisition and forest clearances remain a challenge. He appealed to landowners and stakeholders to cooperate in advancing the project.
