Kolkata, August 13: A nursing staff member was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a government-run hospital in West Bengal on Thursday. The nurse was employed at N.R.S Medical College, located in central Kolkata.
Her body was discovered in the hospital restroom, where she was on night duty. On the day of the incident, she was assigned to the high-dependency unit in the gynecology department.
Initially, it was reported that she was missing from her duty. When her colleagues began searching for her, they found her lifeless body in the restroom.
Hospital officials informed the police about the incident, and the body has been sent for autopsy. According to sources within the hospital, the cause of the nurse’s death will only be clear after the autopsy report is released.
Two years ago, in August 2024, the body of a female junior doctor was also discovered in a seminar room of the emergency department at R.G. Kar Medical College, which is also government-operated. Investigations revealed that she had been raped before her death, leading to widespread protests across the state and national outrage.
In the wake of that incident, the previous Mamata Banerjee government ordered improvements to security at all state-run hospitals. However, questions have been raised about the effectiveness of these measures over the past two years.
Earlier this year, in March, a man lost his life after getting trapped in a malfunctioning elevator at the same hospital, which had not been used by staff due to its poor condition. Additionally, an elderly patient died in the same month because he was not provided a stretcher to reach the restroom.
