Kolkata, August 13: In West Bengal’s Birbhum district, police have posted a court summons at the residence of stone quarry owner Tulu Mandal, also known as Mohammad Najibuddin. He has been evading authorities and a Red Corner Notice was issued against him last week.
On Thursday, a police team arrived at Tulu Mandal’s home and affixed the court summons to his wall. He is required to appear before the Birbhum District Court by 10 AM on August 14.
The summons details the charges against him, including organized crime, destruction of evidence, and criminal conspiracy, which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. He is currently in hiding to avoid capture, and the district court has declared him a ‘fugitive.’
A police officer stated, “Since a Red Corner Notice has already been issued against him, he will have no legal opportunity to flee abroad across any international borders. Once he is officially declared a ‘declared criminal,’ the next step will be to seize all his assets.”
Earlier this month, police recovered ₹28 crore in cash and gold valued at approximately ₹22 crore from the home of Tulu Mandal’s close relative, Meenar Mandal. During questioning, Meenar revealed that the cash and gold belonged to Tulu and were only entrusted to him for safekeeping. Since then, Tulu Mandal has been under the radar of both police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
However, following Meenar Mandal’s arrest, Tulu Mandal went underground. The police secured a notice from the Birbhum District Court last week, which was followed by the issuance of a Red Corner Notice.
Tulu Mandal reportedly began his life as a daily wage laborer but quickly amassed wealth after becoming a close associate of TMC leader Anubrata Mandal during the Mamata government in Birbhum. His name also surfaced in a cattle smuggling case in 2022.
